The client for this project is RYAM, a company involved in the pulp and paper industry. Their plant in Temiscaming, Quebec produces paper pulp, and they were experiencing an issue with their holding tanks for silicate.
These tanks would unpredictibly stop accurately measuring the amount of product in the tank. By the time the problem became noticed, the damage was done and the company had to shut down the production line for months to clear up the crystallized silicate in the tanks. My team was assigned with coming up with a solution.
After lots of research and iteration, the team came up with the proposed design shown above. Essentially, it was discovered that their problem was due to the fact that the company was not monitoring conditions in the tank, which severely affecting the formation of crystallized silicate. Our solution started by including coils around the tank, a steam valve and an air-flow vent to regulate temperature, humidity and pressure. These were controlled by an AI model that was connected to monitors that consistently measured these factors, as they are the three conditions that have the most affect on the crystallization of silicate. By monitoring these conditions and regularly correcting them would avoid the formation, let alone the buildup, of crystallized silicate.
My role in this team was communications liasion, meaning I was the only point of contact between my team and our client. I was in charge of relying information, expectations and organizing meetings. This experience developed my proffesional communication skills greatly.
These peer evaluations were completed using ITP Metrics a little over one month apart. In each diagram, my own rating is in yellow, while my peers' rating is in blue. In the first report I severely under-rated myself compared to my peers. They consistently rated me a 4.8/5 for all qualities. These scores decreased with the second report, which seems to be a pattern for me, as the same happened during my APS111 project. This is an area I can work on, as it seems my overall commitment and contributions (commitment and capabilites in the evaluation) decrease throughout the project. Furthermore, although my communications with the client were smooth, efficient and of timely-manner, one issue that came up with my team members was the lack of communication with them about my tasks for deliverables. This is a quality I actively work on in current teams.
Positive Feedback Examples:
"You did an amazing job communicating with the client which allowed our team to stay ahead of deadlines and do our best work. Keep up the great work."
"Emma you have been the most reliable communication liaison I could ask for, you have led our team in practically all communications externally to our client, to our teaching team and have been diligent communicating your own schedule."
"You showed commitment to the team by completing your assigned tasks and communicating with the team even while on vacation. Your dedication and reliability built trust within our team and allowed our team to stay resilient through the challenging final days of getting the rest of the work done for the CDS."
Constructive Feedback Examples:
"I think communication could have been something to have been improved on. At times, it seemed like it was unclear as to what your responsibilities were."
